Thornbury and Clarksburg
The Georgian Sound Festival is held annually in the communities of Thornbury and Clarksburg in The Blue Mountains, Ontario during the last weekend of April.
First produced in 1992 by the Georgian Sound Big Band, the Festival arose from the band's mandate, framed by its late founder Bob Cringan "to provide opportunities for musicians to share interests and talents, to develop projects to benefit members and their communities with an emphasis on supporting and encouraging youthful musicians."
The festival is now a three day musical extravaganza showcasing every genre of jazz. You will find every style from traditional Dixieland, big band swing, gospel, modern and Latino flavoured jazz among many others during this weekend.
The Festival is currently a production of the Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Club in partnership with the Georgian Sound Big Band and the support of the Blue Mountains Chamber of Commerce and many community volunteers.
NEW FOR THE 2010 GEORGIAN SOUND FESTIVAL is the Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Jazz YouthFest, an invitational jazz event where regional youth jazz bands, stage bands and jazz ensembles perform in front of respected adjudicators. Jazz YouthFest takes place at the Beaver Valley Community Centre in Thornbury on Friday April 23, from 9am-5pm.
The Chantry Island Quartet & Jazz Trio Concert
Following the adjudicated performances, The Chantry Island Quartet, lead by Mike Grace on bass and comprised of fellow adjudicators John McLellan on piano, Steven James playing drums and Meryl Gillmore, principal flute with the Georgian Bay Symphony, will perform three movements from French jazz legend Claude Bolling's Suite #2 for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio.
Following the Quartet's performance the Jazz Trio comprised of Mike, John and Steven will be joined by guest artist Gene Parker for a programme of other jazz favourites.
